Garage Sale: a wire installation by Joel Armstrong
2011
Installation art, wire drawing, Garage Sale
I've been planning the installation for 4 years through a grant provided me by John Brown University. Ive been purchasing items at garage sales and visiting with the sellers about the items they have in their sale. From the items I purchased, I have created wire drawings, and rust paintings in sort of a redemptive story. All items have stories connected with the titles. The exhibition will include all the items I have purchased, plus the artwork—the installation will include a full size garage in the gallery space and an all day garage sale event for the garage sale items and closing reception for the artwork, bringing together two unique crowds.

Northwest Arkansas (September 18, 2011) -The University of Arkansas Student Gallery in Bentonville (sUgAR) is pleased to announce a new exhibition entitled Garage Sale a wire based installation created by artist Joel Armstrong, Assistant Professor of Illustration and Drawing at John Brown University.

Garage Sale encompasses the feeling of being at your neighborhood garage sale. Armstrong uses a full size garage, garage sale items, sod, traditional garage sale signs, and fencing to create an environment for the artwork which will be displayed inside the garage, consisting of wire drawings and rust paintings of the once treasured garage sale items.

There will be an all-day closing event on October 1. A garage sale and viewing will begin bright and early, for all you garage sale goers, at 8am-4:30pm. Gallery will reopen for a closing reception from 5:30-7:30pm. Both events are free and open to the public.

The installation will be open September 15-October 9 with viewing hours Thursday 2pm-6pm, Friday and Saturday 10am-5pm, and Sunday 1pm-5pm.

  • Trying to recreate the look and feel of the "traditional American garage sale" . I've been buying objects for about 3 years now, and recreating (redeeming) them as pieces of wire artwork. Each item has a story to tell, even though the original owners may not be able to come up with any memories about the objects.
  • This is the very beginning of the garage, 3 walls in place!
  • Still under construction, the focus of the installation will be a driveway and a one car garage. The garage will hold all the wire drawings, and the main gallery will have rust paintings on the wall, and all the garage sale items I have purchased...all for sale at an all day garage sale event and closing reception on the 1st of October. Hopefully, it will bring in a crowd that isn't use to visiting galleries, and they will find not only garage sale finds, but artwork that is approachable and that they can relate to.

  • The facade needs one more coat of rust patina, and it will really glow. Installing all artwork this week, show opens on Thursday. the blue line on the floor is where sod will lay.
  • Final Installation view, Garage Sale is ready for opening on September 15th.
  • Installation view with "Garage Sale" sign and sod in place.
  • Each image in the accompanying book has a close up image of the wire piece, a smaller image of the connected wire piece, and a short story that helps define and give new life to the piece.
  • Inside the Garage, the walls are surrounded with wire drawings of the garage sale items.
  • Garage Sale items mixed in with "rust paintings" of the objects.

  • Garage Sale Installation Photos
I had a 3 years grant from John Brown University to put together this installation piece. The concept was purchasing items from garage sales, and collecting stories about those objects. I "redeemed" these items and stories as I created wire drawings and rust paintings from the objects. The installation took the form of an actual garage sale, along with signs, many items, and a full size garage inside the gallery space. The inside of the garage was filled with the wire drawings, and extra gallery space held the items and rust paintings.

  • Drawn and Quartered: a bipolar frame of mind
After being diagnosed with Bipolar while going to grad school, the combination of medication and amplified activity led me to this image of what it felt like to be bipolar. What people see, and what they don't understand.

  • Clothesline: nostalgic backyard installation
Although presented many times, finally exhibited as a collaborative piece combining the work of Neil Ward. Though a personal interpretation of family, the piece is quite approachable and connects well with the audience.

  • Emersion) the sign of Jonah
Memories of night fishing with my father and brother in Corpus Christi, Texas. Always dreamed of what it was like underneath the boat, this answered my question. First and only installation my father ever saw.
